Difference between the two CIP activities

Hi to all those that have been reading my blog.Sorry for the late replies just that i have a few tests before so was a little busy back then.About my two CIP activities,I have done one at ECON Medicare centre and one at the beach cleanup at Changi Beach.

ECON Medicare Centre:

Before I reached there ,I thought that it was going to be a chore but after that,I realised that it was a breeze and it was quite fun talking to the old folks and learning more about their lives before they came to this Medicare centre.I also learnt that not all people in Singapore leaded a good life, living comfortably in their own condominiums ,HDB flats or landed houses.Im also learnt that we should be filial and respectful to our parents and not send them to old folks home,so that they will be able to live a happier life with their family instead of living on their own with strangers all around them.

Cleanup at Changi Beach:

The same as the CIP done at the centre,I thought that it would be a very arduous and tring activity but later when I was doing it with my friend,Teo Junkai.I found out that it was quite fun to do CIP activity with peers because they cracked jokes that would make me be more aware of the litter and rubbish at the Changi beach instead of zoning out into space and building sandcastles in the air. After our clearing of thrashes at the beach ,the enitre area seemed to be more pleasant and less polluted. In this way,we also helped to reduce water pollution and air pollution and makes it more attractive to the community. We also observed a lot of cigarettes butts thrown on the grass by inconsiderate smokers in the public. We also discovered a lot of people pitching tents by the coastline. Not sure if they were campers or temporary dwellers by the coastline.
This is a growing trend in Singapore as it is badly hit by the economic downturn.Lots of poor who cant afford to payoff their HDB flats are forced to sell away their flats. Then these people will make use of the public facilities such as toilets and bathrooms and pitch tents to live at the seaside.i hope our government will think of a way to solve the housing problems faced by the poor and needy Singaporeans.

Thank you.

Bugis bomb hoax

ORIGINAL ARTICLE

19-year-old arrested over SMS hoax about possible terrorist attack in Bugis

By Satish Cheney, Channel NewsAsia Posted: 21 February 2009 1908 hrs

SINGAPORE : Police have arrested a 19-year-old in connection with an SMS hoax suggesting a terrorist attack in the Bugis area in downtown Singapore. Police said that since Friday night, a text message was being circulated around Singapore about a possible terrorist attack in the busy Bugis area. Several callers to Channel NewsAsia also said they had received the SMS. Although there was no credible evidence of such an attack, Police said they still took the necessary precautions to enhance security in the area. Police assure the public there is no cause for alarm as investigations showed the SMS was unsubstantiated. But it is also giving a stern warning to those who perpetuate such hoaxes, adding that they will not hesitate to take action against them.

REFLECTIONS

I think that the 19-year old guy was really crazy at that moment when he sent out the SMSes.My mum also received the SMS and I told her not to worry since Singapore is such a safe country, but she was still afraid and avoided Bugis.I think that the 19-year old guy should be mature enough to know what is right and wrong and also to know what he should do and what he should not do.As a NS man,he should be concentrating on how to defend the country and not on how to spend and waste more money on sending out stupid SMSes to cause social unrest. With the economic recession,he should not waste such precious money on sending out SMSes and he should be trying to stretch every single cent of his money to its maximum limit. He should also be trying to save every single penny so that his next generation will be able to live comfortably.

From this article,it also says that those who try to cause social unrest will also be punished and the police will not hesitate to take action against them.I hope that the punishment will be very serious and it will cause the rest of the public to refrain from doing such immature actions.I also hope that the perpetrator will learn from his lesson and change over a new leaf instead of continuing his actions. He should be a help to the police instead of causing more trouble to the police.

Thank You.

13-year old Dad in England

Hi!Sorry about the slowing down of my pace on blogging. My main topic today is about the 13 year old Dad,Alfie Patten.
Why is this so?This is because of their birth control and their action on impulse. The parents will also have a talk with him and the talk will be "the birds and bees talk".I think that this has happened because they are too immature and they act on impulse. He does not even know "what is financially" according to the Sunday's The Straits Times.

I hope that this will not happen again and I also hope that girls in England who are giving birth to children under the age of 18 would drop. This is because I think that children should think of the consequences of their actions instead of doing things out of curiosity.

Some solutions that I think are feasible include:

  • Parents should be more conscious of their child's actions and behavior, children should also be more mature and think of the consequences of their actions.
  • Children should also be educated on basic sex education and also focus on their studies instead of wooing girlfriends :)
  • Children should also know that impregnating a girl below the age of 16 in Singapore is illegal.
  • Parents should be more aware of their child's actions and counsel them now and then to show that they still care and love them.
I hope that this situation will not happen in Singapore as I think that Singapore is a law by law country.

Thank you.If you have any queries,I would be glad to answer them through the comment box.

Flowers And Algernon : Discussion Questions

For the discussion questions , I will do question 3 and 5.

Question 3) What makes an ideal person or the ideal life?

For this question,I think that happiness makes an ideal person or the ideal life. When we are happy,we are optimistic about the future. When we are happy,we tend to be aware of our surroundings, causing us to be more cautious and more careful.Since we all know that intelligence does not mean happiness, thus intelligence will not only not allow us to be optimistic about our future, but it will also cause us to be very solemn, probably causing us to not have an ideal life that we wanted to have.Usually, when we are an ideal person,we have almost all of the things that we had wanted or dreamt of having, thus we will be joyous and lead an ideal life.I think that the two,an ideal person and the ideal life, are interlinked and when you possess either one of them ,you will also in a short while possess the other of the two.I think that to have an ideal person ar the ideal life, you need to be easily contented with what you possess now and not take it for granted and thus we sholud always try to work hard and for the things that we wish to have because we cannot always have the things that we want.An example is money,if you want a million dollars that is not impossible, but you must work hard enough such that you think that you deserve it,and then you will have it.Also we must always be on the lookout for passing opportunities that we are able to reach out for.

Question 5) Should science be used to artificially improve someone's intelligance or external appearance?

For this question,I disagree that science should be used to artificially improve intelligence or external appearance because now in the present, there are a lot of kinds of plastic surgery being invented in the world.Every second, scientists are finding out new ways of creating different kinds of surgeries but I hope that this action will be frowned upon in the future. It is because I feel that our appearances are special and it is what we are born with.Even if someone's intelligence is increased or the external appearance has changed, you will still be who you are and that cannot be changed.I think that changing the mental intelligence or external appearance is a way in which science is being abused.I also think that although our mental capacity or intelligence has increased,it will also be only temporary and some of them will probably have nasty side effects such as losing your intelligence even more.Science has been invented for our good but I think that this abuse of science has gone overboard.Science has been invented to help us in our lives such as the invention of light bulbs, laptops and much more but have you given a thought about the side effects on these abuses such as the increasing in intelligence and the change in external appearance.I hiope that this abuse of science will be frowned upon in the future and hope that scientists will stop the abuse on science.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog post on the discussion questions for Flowers Of Algernon.

The Taximan's Story

1. What is the irony in the story?

The irony in the story is that although he opposes the idea of young people going to pubs, drinking, going out, taking drugs and making love,he still supports them by sending them to those places by taxi.If he really opposes,he should not fetch the teenagers to these places.

2. What are the themes raised in the story?

The themes that are raised in this story are the habits of young teenagers in the past and in the present, the relationship and communication between the parents and their children, the abuse on the parental trust by the children and also the lack of moral values in the teengaers of the present.

3. How realistic is this story?

This story is realistic enough. In the present, one example is that there a lot of teenager drug addicts going to rehabilitation centers to resist the temptation of drugs. Most of the teenagers also are usually seen in public areas making love, hugging each other affectionately but in the past, when their parents say that they must come home after school, they will come home immediately to study independently and not go out with their friends to waste time so that they will not let their parents down. The children of the present are also too materialistic which means that the only buy the latest fashion so that they will not be too backdated to prevent having lesser friends or to prevent friends from laughing at him or her.

4. What do you think of the taximan? Do you feel sympathy for him?

I think that the taximan is a poor soul, having 8 children and also need to drive around Singapore to earn as much money as possible to help boost the family's income and to help the children in their studies.I feel sympathetic for him as he has such a daughter who lies to him and his wife that she needs to go for a school meeting but in fact, she went to hang out with her friends, put on make-up and wearing a sexy dress.

5. Do you agree with his lamenting?

I agree with his lamenting because in the present, only a handful of children are as obedient as the children in the past and now the teenagers always like to hang out because they think that it is 'cool' and they think that they are able to make more friends.I also agree that the parent's upbringing is very essential in the early ages of the child so that it will make an positive impact on the child so that he will know what to do in the future.

6. What about the other characters in the story? Do you feel sympathy for them?

I think that the parents of the daughter who are the taximan and his wife are very pitiful as they have to put up with the lies of their own daughter that she has meeting but actually is to go out with friends and hang out together.I also think that the daughter should not be so irresponsible and should not lie to her parents because if other people know about this matter, they will think that it is the parents' fault and the parents will be embarrassed. Not only that, but it will also bring shame to the family. I also think that 'Madam' is also very pitiful as she has to put up with the lamenting of the taximan and listen to two sides of his story, and that is to disagree with the teenagers going out ,putting on make-up and lying to their parents and also to support them by sending them to hotels to meet up with friends and how much of a double-standard man he is.

Thank You for reading this blog post.
