1. What is the irony in the story?
The irony in the story is that although he opposes the idea of young people going to pubs, drinking, going out, taking drugs and making love,he still supports them by sending them to those places by taxi.If he really opposes,he should not fetch the teenagers to these places.
2. What are the themes raised in the story?
The themes that are raised in this story are the habits of young teenagers in the past and in the present, the relationship and communication between the parents and their children, the abuse on the parental trust by the children and also the lack of moral values in the teengaers of the present.
3. How realistic is this story?
This story is realistic enough. In the present, one example is that there a lot of teenager drug addicts going to rehabilitation centers to resist the temptation of drugs. Most of the teenagers also are usually seen in public areas making love, hugging each other affectionately but in the past, when their parents say that they must come home after school, they will come home immediately to study independently and not go out with their friends to waste time so that they will not let their parents down. The children of the present are also too materialistic which means that the only buy the latest fashion so that they will not be too backdated to prevent having lesser friends or to prevent friends from laughing at him or her.
4. What do you think of the taximan? Do you feel sympathy for him?
I think that the taximan is a poor soul, having 8 children and also need to drive around Singapore to earn as much money as possible to help boost the family's income and to help the children in their studies.I feel sympathetic for him as he has such a daughter who lies to him and his wife that she needs to go for a school meeting but in fact, she went to hang out with her friends, put on make-up and wearing a sexy dress.
5. Do you agree with his lamenting?
I agree with his lamenting because in the present, only a handful of children are as obedient as the children in the past and now the teenagers always like to hang out because they think that it is 'cool' and they think that they are able to make more friends.I also agree that the parent's upbringing is very essential in the early ages of the child so that it will make an positive impact on the child so that he will know what to do in the future.
6. What about the other characters in the story? Do you feel sympathy for them?
I think that the parents of the daughter who are the taximan and his wife are very pitiful as they have to put up with the lies of their own daughter that she has meeting but actually is to go out with friends and hang out together.I also think that the daughter should not be so irresponsible and should not lie to her parents because if other people know about this matter, they will think that it is the parents' fault and the parents will be embarrassed. Not only that, but it will also bring shame to the family. I also think that 'Madam' is also very pitiful as she has to put up with the lamenting of the taximan and listen to two sides of his story, and that is to disagree with the teenagers going out ,putting on make-up and lying to their parents and also to support them by sending them to hotels to meet up with friends and how much of a double-standard man he is.
